What's a memory card?
Memory cards are small, space-saving gizmos that can be inserted into electrical devices to maximise their storage space. With the ability to store everything from photos to music, movies, games, documents, programs and more, you can find a memory card to suit each of your gadgets to enhance their space and transfer files from one device to another. There are a whole host of different memory cards on the market today, but they all essentially perform the same function – they store electronic data.
What are the different types of memory cards?
The model, size and age of the electronic device you want to use a memory card with can have a huge impact on the type of card you’ll need to get. Due to standardisation, the main types of memory cards out there today include SD, Memory Stick and CompactFlash, though less-used varieties like MMC, SmartMedia and xD Picture Card are still available with an extra bit of digging.
The most widely used variety of memory cards are Secure Digital (SD), which come in an array of different capacities and speeds. There are three main variations of SD card: full-size, MiniSD and MicroSD, all noticeably distinct from one another by their size. Full-sized SD cards are commonly found in larger gadgets, such as DSLR cameras, video cameras and laptops, while the other two varieties are often found in smaller handheld devices, like mobile smartphones, tablets, GPS trackers and car dashboard cameras. Each SD card has its own speed rating, known in the tech world as ‘Class’, and these have been categorised into four main Classes: 2 (2MB/s), 4 (4MB/s), 6 (6MB/s) and 10 (10MB/s). Class 2 is sufficient for SD recording, Classes 4 and 6 support HD recording, and Class 10 is the perfect choice for 1080p or 4K recordings.
Memory Sticks, originally developed and launched by Sony in the late 90s, aren’t too dissimilar from SD cards: they’re a removable flash memory card that allows for greater maximum storage capacity and faster data transfer speeds. They’re typically used as an external storage device for portable electronics, such as digital cameras or portable games consoles.
Finally, we have CompactFlash cards. Manufactured by SanDisk, one of the largest manufacturers of flash memory products in the world, these can be found mainly in portable electronic devices and are favoured amongst users of digital single-lens reflux cameras. These memory cards have proven so popular with photographers that, in 2017, both Canon and Nikon made this their standard memory card format for their flagship digital still cameras. There are two main subdivisions of CompactFlash cards: Type I (3.3mm-thick) and Type II (5mm-thick), which can be bracketed into four main speed varieties, original CF, CF High Speed (using CF+/CF2.0), faster CF 3.0 standard and the even faster CF 4.0 standard.
The size of your files will determine which memory card is the best choice for you. With a wide variety of different storage capacities to choose from, from 2GB all the way through to 1TB, you’re sure to find the perfect memory card to suit your needs here on OnBuy.
