What is collagen?
Collagen is a protein belonging to the fibrillar protein family. It is the main component of the extracellular matrix. Collagen's most important function is to maintain the structural integrity and elasticity of connective tissue, so that joints function properly. In addition, its characteristic structure means that it binds significant amounts of water. Thanks to these properties, it has an effect on the skin.
Building and decomposition processes are constantly taking place in the human body. Nutrition has a very strong influence on these processes. However, from around the age of 25, the breakdown of collagen is overtaken by the production process. The disappearance of collagen fibres is the reason for wrinkles, the appearance of cellulite, flabby skin and also joint problems. According to doctors, it is decisive to reverse this process, i.e. to slow down the decomposition processes and support the building processes. Only then does it become possible to improve the condition not only of the skin, but also of the joints. Meanwhile, 28 types of collagen have been recognised, which have different, important biological functions to perform in the human body. In order to distinguish between them, Roman numerals are used, such as type I collagen, type II collagen or type III collagen, etc., respectively.
Type I collagen
Type I collagen is the most important in the human body, as it makes up 90% of all collagen proteins. It builds the skin, bones and ligaments in humans. It is also the most important for connective tissue as it gives it strength when stretched, not only in the skin but also throughout the body.
It is made up of long, regular chains of amino acids. This structure makes these fibres the most robust and strongest building material. They are much stronger than steel fibres of the same density. For example, to break a collagen fibre with a diameter of just 1 mm, you need to use a load of at least 10 kg. Surprisingly, this type of fibre is made of two amino acids, namely proline and glycine, and a small amount of hydroxyproline and hydroxylysine.
Another important feature of type I collagen, is regularity. Nature has cleverly transformed the large molecules into triple helices, twisted together, which are additionally connected by break-resistant, but stretchable, yellow elastin fibres. This creates a durable, smooth layer on the face, under the epidermis, which cushions pressure. In addition, it stretches like rubber when laughing and then returns to its original shape and smoothness. With a significant protein deficiency, but also with other nutrient deficiencies, or when taking cortisone preparations, the body draws protein from reserves in the connective tissue relatively in the form of collagen.
Collagen depletion is naturally greatest where it is most abundant, i.e. in the bones and skin. Experts in the metabolic process say that a healthy collagen structure should not change over the years. In other words: the skin of the face, neck, breasts, buttocks and thighs should not lose its firm strength, it should have as much strength at the age of 50 as it did at 20. Wrinkles, wrinkled skin and crow's feet are basically nothing more than signs of poor nutrition and insufficient collagen in the body. Unsightly body parts, furrows or cracks only appear where the connective tissue is extremely weakened. For these reasons, among others, dietary supplements are supplemented with ingredients such as natural collagen.
Type II collagen
Type II collagen is responsible, among other things, for flexible and strong tendons. The appearance is entirely dependent on their structure.
Collagen fibres are also an important component of the endothelium of venous vessels, including venous valves. The correct quantity and quality of collagen in the walls of the venous vessels determines their proper functioning.
Type I collagen is found almost exclusively in bones. It accounts for 85-95% of the total organic content of bone. Dysfunction of bone collagen metabolism results in the decalcification of the skeleton, which contributes to increased bone fragility and susceptibility to fracture. Bone is a porous tissue made up of 90 per cent collagen, in which the fusion of collagen with calcium, phosphorus and magnesium takes place. If a sufficiently rich collagen structure of the bone was not created in youth, this can manifest itself in old age as osteoporosis. An adequate amount of natural collagen in the body is needed to rebuild bones damaged by osteoporosis.
Under the influence of rapid weight gain or during intensive growth, as well as during pregnancy, the skin is overstretched, which makes it susceptible to weakening of the collagen fibres. One consequence of this is stretch marks. The formation of stretch marks is linked to abnormal collagen synthesis in the skin. In order to prevent this, it is also necessary to ensure that there is an adequate amount of natural collagen in the body.
Through the right diet and natural supplements, we can support the internal synthesis of collagen, so that the network of collagen fibres can do its job of binding moisture. This results in the skin receiving what it had in abundance when it was young - water. The water stored in collagen takes care of elasticity.
The drinking collagen recipe from bioalgae has been enriched with carefully selected natural ingredients.
Properties of the ingredients contained in bioalgae collagen

Goji fruit
The fruit of the thorn apple (Lycium barbarum, Goji fruit) is a source of antioxidants. They contribute to the protection of cells against free radicals, as well as to the total antioxidant capacity of the body.
Goji berries are among the most nutritious fruits on the planet. They are credited with the longevity of the Hunza tribe, who reach an average age of 100 years. The Hunzis revere these berries so much that they have established separate festivals for them. In central Asia, the Goji berry is called the fruit of longevity. Modern science is also interested in this fruit.
The formation of collagen is mediated by vitamin C, which is an essential coenzyme for collagen formation. Also, vitamin C, as an active antioxidant, provides direct protection of the collagen molecules, against free radicals.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C helps in the normal functioning of the immune system, in the maintenance of normal psychological functions and in the protection of cells against oxidative stress. Contributes to the reduction of feelings of fatigue and tiredness and to the maintenance of normal energy metabolism, and supports the normal functioning of the nervous system. Helps in the production of collagen for the proper functioning of:
- blood vessels;
- bones;
- skin;
- cartilage;
- gums;
- teeth.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E helps to protect cells from oxidative stress.
