Matt Murdoch was blinded by a radioactive substance in the streets of New York City as a child, leaving him with heightened senses, providing a sonar which acts as his vision. The character, created by Stan Lee and Bill Everett in 1964, was fleshed out and saved from cancellation in the 1980's during Frank Miller's tenure on the title, cementing it's place in the Marvel Universe for decades to come.
