Synopsis:
This film is adapted from Milan Kundera's novel of the same name. In 1968, Prague surgeon Thomas (played by Daniel Day Lewis) lived in the pleasure of pursuing women and enjoying sexual pleasure. Painter Sabina (Lena Olin) is Thomas' confidante, but during a visit to a spa, Thomas meets the waitress Theresa (Juliette Binoche). Soon after, Theresa came to Prague alone and they got married. Thomas continued his bad habit of having extramarital affairs with Sabina or other women after marriage. Theresa couldn't bear Thomas' infidelity and ran away late at night, only to encounter the Soviet armed invasion of Czechoslovakia. The three of them fled to Geneva, Switzerland one after another. Sabina met local university professor Franz (played by Derek de Lint), and Theresa lost her job and was unhappy all day long. She returned to Prague alone with her little dog Karenin. How should Thomas choose between freedom and restraint?
This film is one of the top ten American films in 1988. It was nominated for Best Cinematography and Best Adapted Screenplay at the Academy Awards in 1989, Best Drama and Best Supporting Actress (Lina Olin) at the Golden Globe Awards, and won the Best Adapted Screenplay Award of the British Film and Television Association, and the Best Director and Best Film Award of the American Film Critics Association.
