Synopsis:
The Great Race of Mercy, which focuses on the 1925 event where sled drivers and sled dogs worked together to save the lives of children in Nome, Alaska, on the serum relay route.
At the end of 1924, a 2-year-old child in Nome fell ill and was diagnosed with tonsillitis by doctors. This disease is usually not life-threatening, but this child became an exception. Many children were subsequently diagnosed with tonsillitis, and several unfortunately passed away. The doctor ultimately confirmed that the disease was diphtheria. At that time, there was a vaccine that could be used to treat diphtheria. However, all vaccines in Nome had expired, and the new vaccine could not be delivered before the port closed. The Baltic Sea would only thaw in June of the following year, and there were no roads or planes directly connecting Nome. The only way to transport goods was by mail, but in winter, only sled dogs could pass through. The Health Bureau has decided to use two sets of sled dogs for relay transportation, with 20 sled drivers and 150 sled dogs having to travel day and night, crossing rivers, plains, forests, and the frozen Alaska Post Route. The nearest vaccine location is Nanna, 1085 kilometers away from Nome City. Normally, it takes 25 days for dogs to pull sleds, but they successfully completed the relay in just 5 and a half days, saving the lives of multiple children.
The protagonist Togo of this film is one of the lead dogs used by Norwegian sled racer Leonhard Seppala (played by William Dafoe), who is highly praised for his wit, outstanding leadership, and sharp intuition. Seppala was tasked with delivering the most dangerous part of this relay, receiving the batch of immune serum from Nome to Nulato, and successfully completed the task in an environment with minus 30 degrees Celsius and strong winds above level seven. Afterwards, Antarctic explorer Roald Amundsen awarded Togo a gold medal.
