The VL53L5CX is an advanced time-of-flight (ToF) multi-area ranging sensor. VL53L5CX uses latest generation of direct ToF technology from stmicroelectronics, which enables absolute range measurements regardless of target color and reflectance. It offers accurate ranging up to 400 cm and can operate at high speeds (60 Hz), making it fastest multi-zone micro-type ToF sensor on market.
Multi-area distance measurement up to 8x8 area, 63 wide diagonal field of view, can be reduced by software. Using histogram algorithm patented by stmicroelectronics, VL53L5CX can detect different objects in of view. The histogram algorithm can also suppress cover slip crosstalk over 60cm.
The functions of VL53L5CX mainly include: ranging, presence detection, proximity detection, ambient light detection, reflectance detection, multi-region detection and 3D detection. Based on above functions, VL53L5CX has a wide range of applications. It mainly includes mobile phones, computers, household robots, smart appliances, smart door locks, access control, transportation, shelves, vending machines, smart buildings, smart agriculture, smart medical care and so on.
The VL53L5 achieves several breakthroughs: First, the Angle is large: the FOV Angle of ToF products is generally controlled at about 25-27 degrees, and effective distance of FOV (FOV Angle) at about 25-27 degrees is also coordinated according to transmit power, receiving capacity and effective range that algorithm can bear. With software and hardware enhancements, the Angle can now reach 60 degrees.
60 degrees has two advantages: on hand, it covers a larger range of products, especially suitable for slightly larger products, such as TV, big screen, etc. On other hand, this large Angle can also be programmed. If such a large Angle is not needed, the client can program to obtain required Angle, which is currently up to 60 degrees. There are many programming methods below which client can apply.

The second is to achieve multiple areas: can be cut up to 16 areas or more. The VL53L5 is cut into four blocks, or quadrants, each of which can be further cut to 16 or more regions. In case of 16 effective regions, each region can independently output its ranging, which represents initial depth change.
