What’s the difference between electric and manual planers?Â
Aside from the obvious difference of one needing a live power source to run and one relying solely on elbow grease to get going, there are quite a few differences between the humble manual plane and the electric planer.Â
Manual planes are hand-held and powered by hand movement and muscle power. As they require no power source, these tools make a great portable alternative to their electric counterparts, perfect if you’re constantly on the move from job to job. Offering sublime control, these tools are perfect for smaller projects that require just a little taken off the sides here and there. With a starting price of around £10, these pocket-friendly tools are perfect for every budget.Â
Now, for the big guns: the electric planer. Coming in a variety of different shapes and sizes, from smaller, hand-held power planers to larger, stationary benchtop models, you can pick up one of these powerhouse tools for any woodworking task. Power hand planers are typically powered by a mains outlet or with a rechargeable battery and, just like their manual counterparts, combine both practicality and portability all in one handy device. Though, unlike manual planes, these are noticeably more powerful, making light work of even the toughest of woodworking tasks. In contrast, benchtop planers are a more heavy-duty, stationary piece of machinery. These are great if you undertake all your tasks in one place, rather than on-the-go projects, and are fantastic for larger projects. As expected, they do come with a heftier price tag than the handheld electrical varieties, but if you’re a builder who’s going through seemingly endless planks of timber, you certainly won’t regret investing one of these pieces of kit.Â
