Are reading lights important for your home?
If you have a table lamp or a living room floor lamp that you often use for reading, you might think you don't need a reading light. However, reading lights and book lights often come complete with a list of handy features specially included to make finishing your latest novel love affair effortless. These practical additions include features like an adjustable or flexible neck, a clasp or clamp for installing on almost any desk or table, as well as a choice of colour temperatures. Not to mention, whether you enjoy reading the evening paper or spending hours with your nose in a good book, a functional reading light can prevent eye strain and even vision damage.
Which colour temperature is best for reading?
While some reading-friendly lamps allow you to choose the bulb (and therefore the colour temperature, too!), there are many reading lights that come complete with an integrated bulb or a choice of colour temperatures. So, which one is best to use and what exactly does colour temperature refer to? Well, colour temperature is the colour of the light that the bulb gives off and used to be something that couldn't be altered until the advent of LED lighting. Unlike incandescent or halogen bulbs that are only available in the traditional, warm white colour temperature, LED lighting can achieve a wide range of colour temperatures making them suitable for a host of applications.
Colour temperature is measured in Kelvins and they tend to fall into one of three main categories, either the 2500-3200K Warm White, the 4000-4500K Daylight, or the 5000-6500K Cool White. However, the Kelvin number can vary depending on the reading light manufacturer, so it's best to pay attention to the Warm White/Daylight/Cool White label that'll give you a general idea of the reading light colour temperature. By way of illustrating, Cool White is the whitest light you can snap up and is often best for practicality as it banishes shadows and bathes the page in wave of bright light. Warmer colour temperatures on the other hand, are more yellow and therefore ideal for creating a relaxing atmosphere just before bedtime - the choice is yours!
