What should I consider when exploring the range?
Like many things in the world of electronics, this question can sometimes feel like a minefield? Which model would I like? Which brand should I choose? How much memory will I need?... these are just some of the problems that we tend to come across when browsing new machines, and it’s not very hard to see why. After all, if you’re investing in a high-quality piece of kit, you’ll want to make sure that it’s perfectly suited to your needs, and will last a long time in your office.
Before you even begin to look at refurbished laptops, it’s important that you first consider which operating system (OS) you prefer. Windows is probably the best choice if you need Microsoft apps like Office, Access, and Outlook, though Apple’s MacOS is slightly more beginner-friendly. It probably isn’t the first choice of anyone who doesn’t own an iPad or an iPhone though, as your options are mostly limited to MacBooks.
The other two systems are Chrome OS and the various distributions of Linux. ChromeOS is a special operating system made by Google and loaded onto very slim, light laptops called 'Chromebooks'. Chrome OS can be a great operating system for a refurbished laptop because it's designed to be as stripped down as possible, letting slower PCs compete with powerful Windows or MacOS systems. However, what you gain in speed you loose in functionality. Completely free to use and open-source, Linux is endless customisable and configurable, but you need to know lots about how computers run to use it effectively. If terms like 'GNU' or 'Command Line' mean nothing to you, we recommend you avoid reconditioned laptops running on Linux.
You might also like to think about how much RAM you’re going to need. In this case, it’s usually ‘the more the merrier!’. Random-access memory, also known as RAM, refers to what your laptop uses to hold data, and should be considered if you require a lot of memory. 8GB is typically plenty for the average Windows user, though 16GB is far better if you like to use your device for gaming purposes. Finally, double-check for ports. These are the various entry-points around the side of your laptop, that allow you to plug in USB devices, chargers, and other necessary cables.
