How to use weight plates
If using weight plates in your fitness routine is a new concept for you, then you're in the right place as we explore how you can incorporate them into your workout! First and foremost, weight plates are typically made from cast iron with a soft rubber or vinyl coating and are used in conjunction with a barbell or dumbbell to provide an effective workout. These weight plates (also referred to as gym plates) are available in a range of sizes to suit your fitness requirements, allowing you to add or remove weight with ease as you build muscle.
Alternatively, some fitness fanatics use weight plates to hold and incorporate into their standard workout routine. From squatting with a weight plate to holding one as you lunge, there's a huge range of simple exercises you can complete with a helping hand from a weight plate set. Adding weights to your workout can also be a hefty investment, so it's well worth exploring all your options before you commit to your purchase. With brands like V-fit, Body Revolution, and Gym Master to delve into, you could spend hours shopping our selection! However, if you want to fast-track your search, carry on reading as we take a look at the different kinds of weight plates available.
Which weight plates do you need?
If you're ready to buy weight plates but you're not sure which ones are right for you, then don't worry as we're here to help point you in the right direction! Firstly, you might notice that some weight plates are sometimes described using inches while others are described by their weight in either pounds (lbs) or kilograms (kg). Inches refers to the diameter of the gym plate centre hole e.g 2-inch weight plates.
Standard weight plates feature a 1-inch diameter and are best for home use whereas Olympic weight plates boast a 2-inch hole. These 2-inch weight plates are therefore more commonly found in professional gyms and only fit Olympic bars, whereas the standard alternatives won't fit on these Olympic bars and are therefore best for home use. Weight plate sets that are marked in either kilograms or pounds however, refers to the actual weight of the plate.
If you're new to weightlifting, we recommend starting off with either 1.25kg, 2.5kg or 5kg weight plates and transitioning to 10kg weight plates once you begin to build muscle and can lift a more substantial weight. You can also shop an impressive selection of other weightlifting accessories including weight bars, weight storage racks, and even weight bar collars to complete your collection!
