Looking to buy Women's Boat Shoes?

Perfect for any smart-casual event, boat shoes are a gorgeous choice for a variety of settings and outfits. Whether you’re lunching with friends, popping to the shops, or heading to a bar in the evening, they seamlessly complement a range of garbs and garments, whatever your style and character. The practical, comfortable, and durable everyday shoe you didn’t know you needed, they’re the ideal choice for every season, no matter what the weather!

What are boat shoes?

Boat shoes (also known as deck shoes) are typically made of canvas or leather, and feature non-marking rubber soles that are designed for use (you’ve guessed it!) on a boat. For the majority, a siping pattern is cut into the base of the model, primarily to provide grip on a wet deck, while a sturdy construction material and extra application of oil, are intended to repel excess water. Traditionally worn without socks, they’re a great choice during the warmer summer months.

Modern boat shoes, as we know them today, were invented in 1935 by Paul A. Sperry of New Haven, after noticing his dog’s ability to easily bound over ice without slipping. An inventor, businessman, photographer, screen printer, sailor, and outdoorsman by trade, he began by making small incisions to the soles of his existing shoes, to create a stronger grip, and, in turn, inspired the perfect footwear for yacht and boating purposes. Sperry Top-Siders remain an extremely popular brand of boat shoes today, among many others including Portside, Sebago, and Timberland.

When can I wear my boat shoes?

Ultimately, this is completely down to personal preference but, as with many fashionable footwear items on the market, there are a number of well-known dos and don’ts that are worth bearing in mind before braving the brilliant boat shoe.

Number one: they’re perfect for the beach. Designed specifically for maritime activities, their features and characteristics are perfect for any water-based pursuit, so be sure to don a pair on your next trip to the seaside (trust us, you’ll look like a local!). Number two: wear them when you travel. Once they’ve been broken in, this style is arguable one of the most comfortable models out there, as they’re incredibly easy to get on and off, and make those long treks around the airport feel like a walk in the park… literally! So long as you tend to go for the business-casual look, they’re also more than appropriate for the office or even on a date. Not only a great conversation-starter, but also a sure way to show off your personality, they can truly become as unique as you are.

In terms of don’ts, it’s probably best to save your boat shoes for the summer. Not only do you risk getting them wet in the winter, they’re also likely to look a little out of place. Boasting a traditionally casual design, they’re also best reserved for more relaxed and laid-back events.
