How to use your disposable BBQ

A disposable grill is a specific BBQ type that can only be used once, with the foil being recycled or disposed of, after use. To start your grill, remove the outer packaging and light the corner of the starter sheet. This will ignite the charcoal and continue to burn for around 15 minutes, heating up the surrounding area. When the coals reach their optimum temperature, you can then place all your favourite meats, vegetables and accompaniments onto the grill top, turning them every so often (to achieve the quintessential BBQ taste).

The charcoal will remain hot enough to continue cooking for up to 1.5 hours after ignition, but make sure you extinguish it with water or sand, once you’re finished.

A note on safety

Before you even light your disposable barbecue, it’s important that you first choose a safe location and prepare the area properly. Never light up near fences, sheds, trees, shrubs or other flammable items, and never use a disposable BBQ in an enclosed space, like a tent or your shed. This is because they produce carbon monoxide, which can be fatal if inhaled in a non-ventilated area. You should also take care to ensure that you protect the surrounding environment. Especially in hot, dry weather, take special care around grass and nearby bushes, as these can quickly catch fire.

When lighting your disposable BBQ, you should always follow the manufacturer’s instructions, though, for most models, it’ll involve lighting a lighting strip or fuel patch, and placing it back into the barbecue. Never add additional fuel or lighting agents, and, when cooking, use long-handled tools to reduce the risk of burns.

Once you’ve finished with your BBQ, be sure to extinguish it properly. You can use water or sand to do this, but remember that it’s likely to still be hot, even if it appears to be unlit, so take extra care here, too. Ensure that the barbecue has cooled down completely before attempting to move or dispose of it. Rubbish bags and bins are often made of flammable materials, or can be full of flammable waste, so make sure that the barbecue is completely cold before disposing of it at the end of the day.
