How do I measure my child’s foot to determine the right size?
Every child is unique, and the correct shoe size for a little one (of any age) depends on several factors. First, measure the length of their foot while standing upright, making sure to calculate the length of both feet, as their left and right dimensions may be slightly different, by placing them against a wall with weight evenly distributed between both legs. Place their heel against the wall with a book on the floor, touching their longest toe, and measure the distance in centimetres. Typically, babies wear shoes between sizes 1 and 3, so young boys will often need trainers sized 4 and above.
It’s also very important that your child’s feet have space to move and grow in their footwear. In general, you should leave between 1 and 1.5cm of room in a new pair of trainers or boots, as little one’s feet often expand in spurts. In order to make sure that they haven’t outgrown their shoes, it’s a good idea to measure their feet once every two months. Between the ages of two and five, growth tends to occur at a rate of approximately 1.5cm per year.
Which trainer brands are the best for little feet?
Top of the list for practicality, comfort factor, and attractive patterns combined, Sketchers offer some of the most pocket-friendly models on the market. Many have their shoes have Velcro or slip-on designs, which won’t slow your little ones down when they’re embarking on an adventure. Plus, their trainers are made from breathable and high-quality materials, which are often waterproof and moisture-resistant, too – bonus!
For those that want to channel the same vibe as their parents, Adidas and Nike offer matching mini models to their adult counterparts, so you can always look like a fully co-ordinated family. Showcasing a range of athletic designs, these trainers will provide your little boy with extra support and cushioning in the midsole. Not only helping to absorb shocks, but also preventing youngsters from slips and trips, their celebrated sole grip pads are also a massive advantage for the more energetic of little ones. Other popular brands include: Puma, Reebok, Clarks, and New Balance.
