About Pokémon

You’ve entered the Pokemon collection at OnBuy, prepare to do battle! Nah, just kidding: We’re not interested in fighting, just in offering you a selection of amazing Pokemon products! The stars of video games, trading cards, cartoon shows, films, comic books and the odd satanic panic or two, the titular indefatigable Pocket Monsters shows no sign of going away. In fact, at time of writing, they’re literally the biggest selling media franchise of all time!

A Pocket Monstrous history

The journey of every Pokemon trainer began in 1990, when Japanese game developer Satoshi Tajiri was inspired by his childhood fascination with insects and bug-hunting (his peers called him ‘Dr. Bug’ as a child) to create a game in which players assembled a team of cute fantasy monsters with special powers. After six years of development, the first generation of Pokemon games, Pokemon Blue and Pokemon Red, were released for the Game Boy to instant acclaim and obsession.
These games’ magic formula combined the moreish pleasure of collection with the strategic mechanics of classic Japanese role-playing games. What’s more, the ability to trade Pokemon and do battle with your friends via a Game Boy link cable ensured that Pokemon wasn’t just a solo game. The Pokemon Collectible Card Game followed hot on the heels of Blue and Red and became a regular sight in school playgrounds around the globe. Some parents were less enthusiastic about this latest fad, claiming that these digital monsters were turning their children into monster-collecting addicts. A few evangelical preachers even decried the games as the work of the devil!
Connections to Lucifer unproven, the rise of Pokemon continued. Despite being little more than a few blocky pixels on a tiny screen, the creativity that went into the Pokemon designs meant kids fell in love with each and every one. Nintendo capitalised, producing a truly staggering amount of Pokemon themed merchandise, from socks and backpacks to cuddly Pokemon toys. The Pokemon anime came next in 1997. The show’s quality remains a point of contention within the Pokemon community, but no one can doubt its success: A staple programming fixture of children’s television throughout the mid-to-late nineties, this cartoon would see its debut on the silver screen in 1999 with the release of Pokemon the Movie.
It’s been twenty years since the first wave of Pokemania hit, but the popularity of Pokemon is just as strong today as it was twenty years ago. The Pokemon games are still best-sellers, with the developers adding features, design tweaks and literally hundreds of Pokemon with each iteration. The anime tv show is still in production, with over 1,000 episodes released so far! And in 2018, Pokemon made the jump to live action entertainment with the smash-hit phenomenon Pokemon: Detective Pikachu.
