What's the history behind Airfix?
Founded in 1939 by Hungary refugee, Nicholas Kove, Airfix was the first manufacturer in the UK to introduce the innovative injection moulding machine into their production process and only began to turn their focus to the creation of their well-known models after the Second World War. Turning their attention away from the production of plastic combs, Airfix attempted to make a model for the tractor manufacturer, Harry Ferguson.
Not only was this model tractor incredibly popular and perfect for promotional use, but once Ferguson gave Airfix permission to sell the models as toys, Airfix took off and created the famous 1953 Spitfire model! Throughout the 1960's and '70's, Airfix's range of plastic scale models only grew and expanded to include a host of thrilling vehicles and subjects such as trains, spaceships, classic cars and even warships.
Hitting a difficult period in the 1980's, Airfix was sold and now remains in the hands of the Hornby Hobbies Ltd who have boosted the company with a huge investment to rebuild the brand and continue the tradition of creating detailed and beloved plastic scale models for all to enjoy. Having celebrated their 75th anniversary in 2014, Airfix foresee a bright future expanding their wide selection of plastic models for hobbyists all over the world to indulge in.
