The kitchen cookers available
A popular choice for fashionable kitchens, electric cookers offer fast cooking times, even results, and are incredibly easy to clean. Most will usually contain a conventional or fan oven (and possibly a grill, too), giving you the freedom to cook dishes at different temperatures, at the same time. This is ideal for busy households, or those who like to prepare more complex meals. Benefitting from a sleek finish and intelligent features, including smart functionality and added extras, like electronic controls and meat thermometers, electric cookers are versatile and adaptable, making them great all-rounders in the kitchen.
Gas cookers, on the other hand, are known for their hob heat controls and more affordable running costs, meaning they’re popular among professional chefs and amateur users alike. Both single and double gas cookers are available, often featuring a grill or grilling function, but they don’t usually have fans to circulate heat around the oven. Unlike electric hobs, you won’t have to wait for your gas cooker to heat up, though, as the flame is almost instant (so you’ll be able to start frying and simmering in seconds - bonus!).
Finally, there’s dual fuel cookers. These always feature a gas hob and an electric oven, so showcase the best elements of both: the even temperature control of an electric oven, with the precise, instant heat of a gas hob.
Which cooker size should I opt for?
Cookers generally have a standardised depth of 60cm, and a height of 90cm, meaning they’ll usually sit quite comfortably alongside your other kitchen units. But, there are a variety of widths to choose from, depending on your needs, available space, and preferences. Standard cookers are between 55 and 60cm in width, with an oven capacity of around 50-65 litres. They also tend to have two large and two small hob rings or plates.
Slimline models are slightly narrower than these models, standing at roughly 45-50cm wide. These typically have a 35-50 litre capacity, with a second oven or grill usually having a 30 litre capacity, instead.
The largest of the group, range cookers can be up to 110cm wide, and usually benefit from two large ovens, each with roughly 60 litre capacities, plus a separate grill. With five to ten hob rings, suitable for a variety of pan sizes, these models are ideal for larger families and busier kitchens, where you’re likely to be cooking multiple foodstuffs at once.
