2B Or Not 2B?
Not just the tool-of-choice for children, graphite pencils are an essential part of drawing and illustrations - typically being the first step for many who love to create art. Coming in a variety of different hardness levels, graphite pencils can vary from the very soft, to the very hard. The different effects you can achieve with the different hardness types of your pencils vary greatly from the soft, smudgy, and smokiness you can get with a soft pencil, to crisp, details with a hard one - it all depends on the effect you are trying to achieve.
To put it simply, pencils are graded on a hardness scale where the letter and number refer to the hardness or softness of the core. H is used to represent hardness and B is used to represent softness. Hard pencils will appear much lighter and crisper on the paper whereas softer pencils will be less crisp and much darker.
The scale goes from 4H up to 6B. The HB pencil is smack bang in the centre of the scale and offers a good balance between hardness and darkness and the numbers just indicate where on the scale the pencils are. For general writing and drawing tasks you will want to stay somewhere between 2H and 2B.
If you are sketching, the softer grades of pencils are a great option for loose, undefined sketching or shading. Harder pencils are good for using if you are planning on inking over or using a finalise over your marks as they will stay light and will be easy to rub out afterwards.
Packs of graphite Derwent drawing pencils come with a range of different pencils to suit every use you could ever need it for - perfect for school, university, or general use.
