General Description

Eranthis Hyemalis Dapple The Ground With Sunny Blooms Very Early In The Year, This Little Perennial From Asia Minor Is A Delightful Garden Presence In Early Spring. Arising On Short Stems From A Knobbly Bulb, The Yellow Buttercup-Like Flowers Perch Atop A Ruff-Like Whorl Of Three Deeply Dissected, Bronze-Tinged Leaves.

They Bloom With The First Hint Of Spring, Opening Their Flowers Wide In Sunlight And Attracting Bees With Their Honeyed Scent. The Bulbs Also Give Rise To Palmately Lobed Basal Leaves. Plants In This Group (Also Known As Eranthus Cilicica) Have Slightly Larger Flowers And A Frillier Ruff Than Do Forms Of Eranthus Hyemalis From Europe. They Also Bloom Slightly Later. All Growth Disappears By The End Of Spring. Plants Self-Sow Where Happy, Eventually Forming Large Colonies.

Eranthis Hyemalis Has Received The Royal Horticultural Societys Award Of Garden Merit (Agm) Which Is For Plants Of Outstanding Excellence

Winter Aconite Thrives In Partial Shade And Well-Drained, Humus-Rich Soil. Plant Bulbs Shallowly As Soon As Possible After They Are Harvested. Use This Beautiful Little Spring Ephemeral In Masses. Intermixed With Snowdrops And Other Early-Blooming Plants.Also Are Perfect For Naturalising Under Deciduous Shrubs And Trees.

Eranthis Hyemalis Are Notoriously Difficult To Become Established And May Take A Couple Of Years To Do So, So Please Be Patient.

In Autumn Plant The Bulbs 7-10 Cms Deep. They Can Also Be Planted In The Spring For Summer Flowering
