The coarse thread is the point of the screw: it is cut to bite into timber, displacing more wood fibre with every turn than the shallow, closely-pitched fine thread used on metal stud systems, so the screw engages quickly and grips the stud or joist firmly instead of stripping out under load. Hardening the carbon steel gives the shank the strength to resist twisting off under power-tool torque in dense timber, a self-tapping point starts its own way into the wood, and the pan-style bugle head has a tapered underside that draws down into the plasterboard rather than punching straight through it, so the head finishes level with the paper face for a clean, paintable surface.
