Using an American recipe for Dutch gin, the Chief Gowanus New-Netherland Gin is produced by the New York Distilling Company with a recipe unearthed by spirit historian Dr. David Wondrich in 'The Practical Distiller', which was printed in 1809. The New York Distilling Company combines unaged, double-distilled rye whiskey with juniper berries and Cluster hops, which would have been used by distillers in 1809. This mix goes through a third distillation and is matured in oak for three months. The result is a malty, herbal gin that feels modern while still being decidedly traditional. Following their habit of honouring important New York figures with their drinks, the New York Distilling Company named this gin after Chief Gowanus, who was chief of the Canarsees in the days when Brooklyn was predominantly Dutch.
