Popularität und Anerkennung des norddeutschen Autors Ehm Welk beruhen auf den als Kummerow-Trilogie bezeichneten Romanen Die Heiden von Kummerow (1937), Die Lebensuhr des Gottlieb Grambauer (1938) und Die Gerechten von Kummerow (1943). Das umfangreichere Nachkriegsschaffen spielt eine eher untergeordnete Rolle. Die vorliegende Studie fragt, welche Bedeutung ihm tatsächlich im Gesamtschaffen des Autors zukommt. Dabei werden u.a. anhand von Romanen wie Der Nachtmann (1950) und Im Morgennebel (1953) zahlreiche bislang unbeachtete Aspekte des Welkschen Werkes und Wirkens vorgestellt und ein modifiziertes Welk-Bild entworfen. Der Untersuchungszeitraum erstreckt sich auf die Jahre zwischen 1945 und dem Todesjahr Ehm Welks, 1966.
