1. Black wire is directly grounded to the outboard, emergency stop switch with lanyard for all outboards. 2. Many older outboards do not offer protection in case you fall out of the boat by turning off the ignition. 3. This important device has a lanyard that wraps around your wrist or attaches to your clothing, it will shut off the engine if you have an accident on the water. 4. The switch is open circuit and closes when activated by pulling the lanyard. You can also activate it by simply pressing the red button. 5. If you are not getting any spark to your outboard ignition system, it is very possible that your existing kill switch is faulty or stuck in the off position and needs to be replaced.
