- Just use a hot iron to apply and then trim off the excess. New, unfinished wood/edging will almost certainly be a lot lighter in colour than existing wood, especially as our material has been sanded. If matching to existing wood, it is very likely that the piece to be matched will have been treated with a finish, e.g. wax or lacquer. Dampening a corner of the edging slightly will give an idea of what the colour and grain will look like after a finish has been applied.
