My Year Off (Abridged) Cassette Audio Book - 2 Cassettes Description

This is a 2 cassette audio book from the Macmillan Audio Books range of Robert McCrum's "My Year Off".  The cassettes have a given running time of approximately 3 hours and this abridged version is read by Robert McCrum and Sarah Lyall.

On the morning of 29 July 1995 Robert McCrum, forty-two, newly married and at the top of his profession as one of the most admired editors in British publishing, woke up to find himself totally paralysed on his left side.  He did not knowit yet, but he had suffered a massive stroke, the result of a blood clot in his brain.  In the weeks to come he would have to face the reality that his life had changed irrevocably, and that medical science, maddeningly, could neither pinpoint the cause of his illness nor offer any guarantees of recovery.

People think of a stroke as a disaster which happens exclusively in old age, but 150,000 Britons suffer a stroke every year, and one in five of those affected will be under 40.  Faced with the enforced solitude of convalescence, Robert embarked on a journey of discovery, both about himself and about the illness that had so dramatically affected his everyday life.  My Year Off is both an examination of a life interrupted in mid-flow, and an invaluable guide for stroke sufferers and their friends and families.
