How It Works

Unlike a conventional sewing machine, the Novum SP1000 uses barbed needles instead of thread. These needles punch fibres through layers of fabric, catching and interlocking them to create permanent bonding and sculpted surface textures. This allows you to felt wool roving into fabric, build up three-dimensional shapes, and create decorative surfaces that would be impossible with ordinary stitching.

The machine has no feed dogs, so the fabric is moved entirely by hand. You can guide your design freely in any direction – left, right, forwards, backwards or diagonally – giving you complete artistic control, much like drawing or painting with textiles.

The SP1000 is often used alongside a standard sewing machine, allowing you to first create embellished fabric panels and then turn them into garments, cushions, bags, wall art or wearable fibre sculptures.
