Potentilla McKay's White. Shrubby Cinquefoil Description

Potentilla McKay's White also known as Shrubby Cinquefoil or Bush Cinquefoil.

A very attractive, compact, ball shaped plant with small, dusky green leaves and a busy habit.

From late spring until late autumn Potentilla McKay's White carries an abundance of creamy white buttercup shaped flowers at the tips of the branches.

These eye-catching blooms contrast well with the dark, ferny foliage.

As the branches of the plant age and mature the bark begins to peel giving McKay's White a wonderful almost artistic appearance.

Slow growing and long lived, Potentilla McKay's White will seldom grow more than 24 inches tall with a similar width.

When fully grown you can expected it to live about 30 years.

Great shrub for the front of mixed borders yet it is adaptable enough to make a fine low growing hedge and can also be used as a spot plant or planted en-mass.

Prefers a site in full sun and although unfussy about soil type has a strong dislike for wet soil and is reputed to be drought tolerant once established.

Because of its high urban pollution tolerance Potentilla McKay's White is often used in inner city planting schemes.

Excellent for attracting butterflies and other beneficial insects to the garden.

Unlike most other members of the Potentilla family which are susceptible to powdery mildew McKay's White has a strong resistance to this disease.

A very low maintenance shrub but any pruning necessary should be carried out in late winter.

Someone once described Potentilla as follows and I quote "the ultimate flowering shrub for northern gardens, hardy, tough and adaptable to all conditions" who am I to disagree.
