Pumpkin Jack O Lantern

A long-established favourite for the Hallowe'en market and probably the best all-round pumpkin for both carving and eating.

Produces beautiful orange skin fruits with a wonderful sweet flavoured orange yellow coloured flesh.

The big pumpkins are often 25-35 cm in diameter and can weigh between 5-7 kgs each.

They are widely used for Halloween decoration and Jack O Lantern is the perfect size and shape for this purpose.

Although it may sometimes lack the uniformity of hybrid varieties and the shapes and sizes may vary a little the thick flesh makes for easy carving.

But Pumpkin Jack O Lantern is not just for decoration, it has many culinary uses as well and its delicious orange flesh is used in soups, stews, desserts and of course made into the traditional pumpkin pie.

Don't discard the seeds, they too are great to eat and are delicious roasted.

Grows best in a well-drained soil, rich in organic matter and simply thrives in sunshine, the more the better.

Dig in plenty of garden compost or other organic material prior to planting if necessary.

For the best crops Pumpkin Jack O Lantern needs a good long warm summer, this may mean starting the plants off inside and transplanting them outside when all danger of frost has passed.

The sprawling vines are good yielders but to get the best fruit you will need to reduce these to one or two pumpkins per vine
