Before you start

Protect your wood from everyday life while maintaining its natural tones.

You can use this product on bare of previously varnished wood but it's not suitable for painted wood.

Your room needs to be warm and well ventilated. Our varnish is low odour, but you still might want to open a window or door.

Don't forget to wear a mask when you're sanding wood, you don't want a mouthful of dust

How to prepare wood for varnishing

Give the surface a good wipe down with a cloth and white spirit to remove wax, grease, dirt and oil.

Use 120 grit sandpaper to give the surface a quick sand a smooth out any rough patches. If your wood has an old coating on it, sand away the peeling, loose and flaking bits so the surface is even.

Let the dust settle and wipe it away with a damp cloth. Leave the wood to dry thoroughly before varnishing.

Application

Give your varnish a good stir to smooth out lumps.

Test the colour on a hidden patch to make sure you're happy with it. It may darken your wood slightly but it should bring out its natural colour.

If you're happy with how it looks, apply an even layer of the varnish painting in the direction of the woodgrain. Wait one hour for the coat to dry. You will need two to three coats for complete coverage and protection.

Before you apply your final coat (whether that's the second or third), sand down the surface and wipe the dust off with a cloth. This will help your final coat stick smoothly and will give you a perfect finish.

Cleaning

Once your final coat is dry, you'll be able to clean your wood just like normal. Make sure to clean up any dirt or grit that could cause damage to the finish.

Repair

If you do spot a section of your varnish that's looking less than perfect, sand it until smooth and then just reapply a couple of coats and it will be good as new.
