Dianthus barbatus

Originally from southern Europe, this familiar, slow-growing and slightly bushy member of the pink family has lance-shaped leaves.

Produces densely packed, flattened heads of sweet-smelling flowers.

Sweet William bridges the gap between the spring and summer flowering bedding plants.

There are many varieties, mostly in pastel shades of pink, mauve and white.

Although usually grown as a biennial, Sweet Williams can last several years.

The attractive highly fragrant blooms are well worth growing for the scent alone.

Great for attracting wildlife to the garden, moths love it as do bees.

Very easy to grow in any (except acid) well-drained garden soil.

No cottage garden would ever be without this old favourite but it has a place in every garden large or small.
