Fixed base vs plunge base DeWalt routers
You'll find two distinct types of power tool routers in this category: Fixed base routers and plunge routers. It's important to know the difference because both types are suited for different tasks and woodworking experience levels.
A fixed base DeWalt router has a router base (the part of the router that does the actual cutting) fixed at a certain height, normally measured in quarters of an inch. Fixed base routers have a ball-bearing inside that makes it easier to glide them along the surface of your cutting for a smoother, faster cut. This type of router is great for tasks that require lots of precision and control, making it best suited for professionals who are already certain of what they're doing before they start cutting.
On the other hand, a plunge base DeWalt router has a trigger attached to a plunger mechanism. This allows you to move the router blade up and down while cutting. It's a much more flexible way of working with a router, well suited for DIY hobbyists and beginner carpenters, but you'll need some kind of cutting fence or guideline to cut accurately, and even with those guides a fixed base router will be more accurate than a plunger base model.
