It was inevitable that they would fill the gap in female perfumes for women that couldn't wear most fragrances because of allergenic ingredients. Although Clinique perfumes bring the brand's focus on hypoallergenic recipes the aromas speak for themselves. Even if you're allergic to nothing, you should definitely check some of their fragrances out.
Clinique Happy Aromatics
The brand's most enduring fragrance is Clinique Aromatics Elixir, first released in 1975. Despite its vintage it remains a brilliant choice thanks to its complexity and non-conformist nature. It opens fresh, sharp and herby with a combination of floral and aromatic elements. Clary sage meets with spicy coriander, green chamomile, clean lemon verbena and frosty aldehyde notes. Even rosewood makes an appearance, a rich, woody note normally reserved for base fragrances that adds even more complexity.
Things don't get simpler in the middle. It's a concord of floral notes - rose, carnation, ylang-ylang, jasmine - that create a delicate yet opulent centre. Meanwhile, powdery, earthy notes emerge from the inclusion of orris root. The base is just as sharp as the top notes but with a more mossy emphasis. Oakmoss and patchouli form the key accord of the dry-down, with vetiver and incense accords adding a smoky aspect. Overall, Clinique Aromatics perfume is a strong scent with a retro feel that still feels relevant. If you want a truly memorable signature scent in a world of fruity florals, choose this eau de parfum.
For a less dramatic departure from current women's fragrance trends, turn to Clinique Aromatics in White, a flanker scent released in 2014. This chypre floral brings amber elements to bear, creating a crowd-pleasing scent that's nonetheless unusual and distinctive. It opens with florals and tingling pepper notes from Szechuan pepper, plus a sharpness from violet leaves. The middle is a brilliant mix between rose and patchouli with a slight hint of orange blossom. Finally the amber notes hit. It's a musk triple bill of traditional animalic notes, amber and balsamic-tinged benzoin.

The other classic Clinique perfume is Clinique Happy. Released in 1998 this is a citrus bomb with a massive upfront dose of orange that never fades through the dry-down. It's joined by grapefruit bergamot, apple and plum notes for a little added complexity.
In the middle you'll be introduced to a fun mix of pink and white florals. The green refreshing vitality of lily-of-the-valley leads the way, supported by powdery and spicy freesia, lemony fresh rose and romantic orchid. The florals continue into the base with the inclusion of mimosa, magnolia and lily. Although musk and amber lend a grounding richness, the base is still exceptionally light and bouncy, just like the feeling the fragrance is named after.
The main Clinique Happy perfume flanker is Happy Heart. This takes the citrus-floral combination and flips the strength on its head. The orange zest is still present in the perfume but it's less strong than the gorgeous water hyacinth accord in the middle: Green, floral and with an aquatic nuance, it's a light touch fragrance to be a perfume's pillar, making it perfect for the Clinique Happy perfume line.
