Looking to buy SDS Drills?
If you're going to be spending long hours on a construction site boring holes in solid brick and other dense, hard material, you need a power tool that's strong enough and tough enough to do the job. Introducing OnBuy's selection of SDS drills, the most powerful type of electric drill you can buy.
SDS drills: upgraded hammering
So what makes these drills so tough? It's all in their bits. An SDS drill is essentially a type of hammer drill. They have the same reciprocating 'hammer' action that helps to force the drill bit through super-tough material like brick or concrete. The difference is in the chuck, which has special slots at the end of its shank, ensuring a seamless, tight fit. SDS (Slotted Drive Shaft) drill bits lock in place to prevent the drill bit from spinning when in use.
This means that the drill bit can't work its way loose as you drill. The motor on an SDS drill is more powerful than a similar sized hammer drill, assisted by special ball bearings inserted into the chuck to ensure smooth reciprocation. You'll be able to drill through thicker masonry for longer than you would with any other type of drill. In addition to buying the drill itself, you'll also need a set of SDS drill bits. These are longer than normal bits (particularly SDS Max bits, which measure up to 18mm long) and often carbide tipped for extra penetration power and durability. You can find these special items in our dedicated drill bits category.
SDS drill brands
SDS drills are a more specialised type of power tool than ordinary drills, so the brands that make them tend to cater toward professionals more than the DIY enthusiast market. You'll discover SDS drills from Makita and DeWalt in this category, for example. If you're interested in buying a cordless SDS drill from these brands you can find spare power sources for sale in our power tool battery pack category.
As good as SDS drills are, they're not a comprehensive solution for every job you'll need to do. SDS drills are too powerful to drill through wood and plaster without leaving a larger, more ragged hole than is desirable. You also can't use them as an electric screwdriver - they'll strip the head off your screws almost immediately. For this reason we recommend that you buy another type of drill to accompany your SDS machine. Since they're so versatile, we recommend getting a combi drill. If you'll be driving a lot of screws a cordless drill is best, since they're more likely to have a clutch, which is necessary to reduce the torque enough that you won't over tighten screws or strip heads.
