Are fan heaters expensive to run?
If you’re looking to heat a specific area of your home quickly, an electric blower heater is ideal. Petite, practical and portable, they’re great for warming smaller spaces as they don’t require much room, and are best-suited to bathrooms, garages and attics. Typically, they only use around 1-2kW of energy, which means that, for an hour of running time, they’ll probably cost between 30 and 45p. Ascertaining if this is cheaper than the cost of running a radiator will depend on whether it’s an oil-filled electric model, or one that’s part of an existing central heating system. The majority of oil-filled radiators are rated at less than 1kWh, which makes them cheaper than fan heaters on an hourly basis. However, in order to completely heat a room, oil-filled radiators have to be left on for longer, so, all in all, the costs are actually very similar. It is worth bearing in mind, though, that fan heaters should be used in short, sharp bursts, to keep the running cost down.
Of all the fan heaters for sale, those with a positive temperature coefficient (PTC) ceramic element are perhaps the most efficient, as they tend to keep rooms warmer for longer periods of time. For smaller spaces, you’re more likely to require a 600W model, though larger or colder rooms may need a 1.2-3kW alternative.
Features to look out for
Perhaps the most important feature to look out for in electric fan heaters is the thermostat, as this is crucial for keeping your room at a decent temperature level, saving you energy and money (in the long-run) by turning the element off every time your desired heat is reached. Frost protection can be an added benefit for conservatories or utility rooms, too, as it means your fan coil heater will run at a minimal level.
Some wall-mounted electric fan heaters come with a timer to switch them on for just a specific time of day, while others showcase temperature displays and remote controls. A few industrial electric fan heaters are even introducing Wi-Fi connectivity and smart controls now, allowing you to access the blower with simple voice commands and apps (including cold air settings for warmer summer days). As a final consideration, don’t forget to check the safety features of your chosen make and model, such as tilt protection and cut-out, should the heater be knocked over.
