Shalimar was created by Jacques Guerlain in 1925, as a tribute to the legendary love story between Emperor Shah Jahan and his wife Mumtaz Mahal. Before becoming emperor his name was Prince Khurram. According to legend, twenty-year-old Prince Khurram met a young girl named Arjumand Banu in the bazaar where her family worked.
Mesmerized by her beauty, after he became emperor, he made her her wife as Mumtaz Mahal, which means "Jewel of the Palace". After the wedding, the prince and Mumtaz were inseparable, in war and in peace. She had borne Shah Jahan's 13 children and died during the birth of his fourteenth child at the age of 39 her death devastated Shah Jahan and he had built the Taj Mahal in memory of his wife and his undying love.
Shalimar is named after 'The Gardens of Shalimar'. It was Mumtaz's favorite garden. Shalimar is one of the best selling perfumes in history and its magic is undeniable. The perfume is composed of citrus notes, lemon and bergamot, jasmine, may rose, opoponax, tonka bean, vanilla, iris, Peruvian balsam and ambergris.
The freshness of citrus notes leads to a floral heart ending with a warm and luxurious trail. Here you can see an advertising video for Shalimar by Guerlain. Shalimar Black Limited Edition Christmas was introduced in 2007 as a limited edition Christmas bottle of this classic fragrance.

Inspired by the passionate love story between an emperor and an Indian princess, Shalimar, which means "temple of love" in Sanskrit, symbolises the promise of eternal love forevermore. It is a fragrance of desire. With its smouldering and slightly impertinent character, the star oriental fragrance in perfumery embodies skin-caressing sensuality with a hint of the forbidden. "Wearing Shalimar means letting your senses take over," Jacques Guerlain would say.
In 1925, the Shalimar bottle designed by Raymond Guerlain won first prize at the Paris Decorative Arts Exhibition. Its curves were inspired by the basins of the famous Shalimar gardens. The fan stopper with its sapphire transparency recalls the garden's eternally gushing water.

A flight of flowers and bergamot whips up the top notes with a breeze of freshness. The heart is warmed by enveloping and delicately powdery notes of iris, jasmine and rose. Jacques Guerlain daringly used a completely new gourmand molecule, ethylvanillin, blended with the Jicky accord. Swept away by this deliciously carnal creation, which he worked on night and day, he knew that he was paving the way for a "small revolution": the first pure oriental fragrance.
