Purple Sprouting BROCCOLI

Initially cultivated by the Romans purple sprouting broccoli has been grown in the UK since the early 18th century although it has only risen to prominence in the last 30 years.

The word broccoli means "little sprouts" in Italian and it is part of the cabbage family.

Often referred to simply as purple sprouting this is the original version of broccoli and has long stalks and small purple flower heads.

The leaves, heads and stalks are all tender and edible.

A very versatile vegetable it can be steamed, boiled or used in stir-fry dishes

Tasty and nutritious the purple heads turn green when cooked and it is an excellent choice for garnishing or mixing fresh with other vegetables.

The hardiest and the most popular broccoli for growing at home purple sprouting broccoli is extremely useful for heavy soils and cold areas where little else can over-winter.

Like other members of the brassica family Purple Sprouting Broccoli will produce a poor crop if the soil is poor, infertile or loose.

Ideally the ground should be firm and rich in organic matter, it should be dug in autumn with plenty of well-rotted farm yard manure or compost worked in if necessary.

A useful but much underrated vegetable.
