Carry on reading to discover the many advantages of cooking on gas!
Are gas cookers better than electric?
Whether you decide to opt for a gas or electric cooker will depend on your requirements. While gas cookers are typically much cheaper to run, electric ovens are often more user-friendly thanks to their digital thermostats. Plus, electric ovens have the option of fan-assisted models which can distribute heat more effectively for even cooking - ideal for cooking large portions of meat to perfection. Plus, some people can find gas cookers off-putting, especially when the electrical igniter doesn't work. Although you can manually light almost every modern gas cooker using either a match or a lighter, some people find this process a little scary due to the highly-combustible nature of LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas).
Are gas cookers being phased out?
No, don't worry! Gas cookers aren't going anywhere! If you're concerned about gas cookers being phased out, then you may have got your wires crossed with the phasing out of gas boilers. As of 2025, low-carbon heating systems will be installed in in all new build homes, replacing gas bookers. However, this won't affect your gas cooker, so you can carry on searching for a gas model without worrying that it'll be banned anytime soon.
Can you install a gas cooker yourself?
In some cases, you can install a gas cooker yourself, but this is only the case if you already have a terminated point in your kitchen. Once you have this point, all you need to do is attach the gas cooker to your mains supply using the bayonet fitting (a bayonet fitting is the fitting that most gas cookers come with). To remove it, simply push the hose from the gas cooker up against the wall while twisting it, then pull! This process is completely legal. However, if you want to install a gas cooker without a terminated point already in your kitchen, you'll need to be on the Gas Safe Register first - the official list of gas engineers who are qualified to legally work on gas appliances.
