One World

One World Description

Released in November 1977, 'One World' is widely regarded as one of John Martyn's finest achievements and a pivotal album in his evolution from folk-based singer-songwriter to sonic innovator. Recorded at Woolwich Green Farm in Berkshire and produced by Chris Blackwell, the album employed highly unusual recording techniques, including the placement of speakers and microphones around a lake to capture natural ambience and environmental sounds. The album blends folk, jazz, rock, dub and ambient influences into a distinctive and atmospheric soundscape. Its eight tracks range from the reggae-inflected 'Big Muff' and the hypnotic 'Smiling Stranger' to the tender ballad 'Couldn't Love You More' and the expansive closing piece 'Small Hours', a haunting composition that showcases Martyn's pioneering use of Echoplex guitar effects.
