AGAPANTHUS Windsor Grey. Lily of the Nile. Description

AGAPANTHUS Windsor Grey

Native to South Africa, but now spread around the temperate world,

Agapanthus is known by many common names, The Nile Lily, Blue African Lily, Lily of the Nile amongst others.

Produces clumps of strap-like leaves and large round umbels of beautiful flowers on sturdy stems July to September.

The trumpet or bell-shaped flowers of Windsor Grey are an unusual combination of white with a hint of soft lilac giving them an almost dove grey appearance fading to a pinkish grey as they age and mature.

The large blooms of this fantastic variety also feature grey anthers with green pollen.

Easy to grow Agapanthus requires a little warmth, sunshine and a plentiful supply of water when in active growth.

Plant in mixed borders where they will receive some shelter but their tidy foliage which seldom reaches more than 90cm tall with a spread of approx. 90cm.

Windsor Grey is ideal for pots and containers and is excellent when used as a cut flower with blooms often lasting two weeks or more in the vase.

Like all Agapanthus Windsor Grey seems to thrive when its roots are slightly congested.

Plant in well-drained soil, in full sun or part shade and add some granular fertilizer for a good display of flowers in summer.

Remove faded flowers and let stems die back in autumn.

Although Windsor Grey is frost tolerant a mulch of organic matter such as farmyard manure over the crown of the plant will help give it protection against stronger frosts.

Plants in containers should be brought into a cold greenhouse, shed or garage during the winter and kept virtually dry.

Although it can take a couple of years for Agapanthus to establish, your patience will be rewarded with an abundance of flowers throughout the summer months.

All pictures used are of mature plants in full bloom and are for illustration purposes only, they may not reflect plants at all times of the year.

Our plants of Agapanthus Windsor Grey are supplied ex. 9cm pots, they can be planted out immediately but better results may be obtained if they are grown on for a short time in a slightly larger container before transplanting to their final growing positions.
