LUPIN Russells Hybrids

Before the 1930s Lupins were nothing special, but the introduction of the Russell Hybrids changed all that and they are now amongst the most popular of all perennials.

Tall graceful spikes of dense, lightly scented pea-like flowers in various shades of red, blue, yellow, rose, white and many combinations of bi-colour burst into bloom in June and July.

Very striking, these tall spires of colour will often reach a height of 3-4 ft. and are simply magnificent at the back of a border.

A second crop of blooms in September is also possible if the first flush is removed after the fade.

Accommodating plants, they are quick-growing, prefers full sun but are tolerant of light shade and of town conditions but they can sometimes be short lived.

This cottage garden favourite prefers cool growing conditions and a well-drained slightly acidic soil.

Add peat (not compost) to the site before planting and cover the crowns in winter.
