AMARYLLIS Bogota Although commonly known as Amaryllis most of the bulbs offered for sale in autumn are really varieties of Hippeastrum. Originating in the tropical mountain regions of Chile and Peru these amazing flowers are one of the easiest plants to bring into bloom. In winter and early spring clusters of lily-like flowers are produced on thick stalks or stems over an extended period. These large flowers and the ease with which they can be produced have led to Amaryllis being in huge demand all over the world. Flowering approximately 9-10 weeks after planting these fantastic plants are ideal for brightening up your home during the dark days of winter. Bogota is one of the more recent introductions and features long slender petals with wavy edges arranged in a star shape giving it a spider-like appearance. A rare and strikingly beautiful variety with bright scarlet petals slightly shaded or brushed with darker red, occasionally marked with a thin ivory line and flushed with green on the reverse side. An excellent example of this modern style of Amaryllis, the outrageous colour combination, exquisite form and prominent red stamens giving it a wild and fascinating look. Bogota is certainly unusual but carries a charm all of its own and certain to cause a stir when on display.
