This hardy annual is native to North America but has been a favourite in United Kingdom since 16th century.

Tall growing, sunflower blooms are traditionally golden yellow with a dark brown/black centre.

The showy flowers are often 30-40cm in diameter and the dark centre contains an abundance of tasty seeds.

Now grown commercially in many countries around the world including United Kingdom and Ireland, the seeds are processed into sunflower oil.

They are also a great source of food and can be eaten raw or roasted and made into snacks.

The seeds are beloved by birds and after flowering the seed heads can be left on the plant.
