Pumpkin CONNECTICUT FIELD An heirloom variety from the USA, it has been grown since before the 17th century. One of the oldest pumpkins in existence yet Connecticut Field is still regarded as the standard or classic pumpkin. The huge big pumpkins with their bright orange skin are often 40-45 cm in diameter and can weigh between 10-12 kgs each. They are widely used for Halloween decoration and Connecticut Field has simply the perfect size and shape and its flat bottom makes it easy to carve. The pumpkin is not just for decoration, it has many culinary uses as well and its delicious orange flesh is used in soups, stews, desserts and of course made into the traditional pumpkin pie. Connecticut Field grows best in a well-drained soil, rich in organic matter and simply thrives in sunshine, the more the better. The sprawling vines are good yielders but to get the biggest and best fruit you will need to reduce these to one or two pumpkins per vine.
