SPINACH BEET Perpetual Often referred to as Swiss Chard but Spinach Beet is smaller with narrower stems and dark, fleshy leaves. It is also very resistant to bolting and therefore very useful on dry ground. Spinach Beet, looks, tastes and grows very similar to spinach but it will crop almost all year round, hence the name Perpetual. A great container vegetable, Spinach Beet is perfect for pots or troughs on the patio or balcony, in fact if space is limited they can be placed almost anywhere. It will tolerate a wide range of soils but Spinach Beet prefers a dappled or lightly shaded position with rich, moisture-retentive free-draining soil. Very hardy, Perpetual is suitable for autumn and winter cropping although overwintered crops will need some protection. Spinach Beet are not normally troubled with pests, the only thing to keep a look out for are slugs. Can be eaten raw or lightly boiled or steamed as served like spinach.
