BROCCOLI Autumn Calabrese Broccoli also known as Calabrese has lots of shoots instead of one big flowerhead. A very versatile vegetable that can be used steamed, boiled or in stir-fry dishes throughout the late summer and early autumn. Quick growing, tasty and very productive, Autumn Calabrese yields heavy crops of delicately flavoured green spears. Soil must be kept moist but be careful not to over-water. Autumn Calabrese is ideal for successional sowing from late March to July. A useful but much underrated vegetable. Like other members of the brassica family Autumn Calabrese will produce a poor crop if the soil is poor, infertile or loose. Ideally the ground should be firm and rich in organic matter, it should be dug in autumn with plenty of well-rotted farm yard manure or compost worked in if necessary.
