Broad Bean Luz de Otono Description

Unwins Broad Bean Luz de Otono Seeds yield plants with five to seven tasty beans per pod. This variety produces a high yield, overwinters well and crops early when sown in autumn, or can be sown later for an autumn harvest.

The ability to harvest in autumn is a unique quality and allows you to extend the amount of time you can enjoy these delicious beans over. This unusual variety has long pods and produces very tasty beans.

This variety is easy to grow and is on the RHS Plants for Pollinators list as it is fantastic for attracting valuable pollinators to your garden.

  • Prefers full sun
  • RHS Perfect for pollinators
  • Sow: February to April, July to November
  • Harvest: May to June, September to November

Sowing
Sow individual seeds 5 cm deep and 15 cm apart in well drained soil. Protect with cloches or fleece in cold weather. Broad beans are often sown in double rows about 25 cm apart. Allow 45 cm between each set of double rows. In raised beds, sow single rows 25 cm apart.

Aftercare
Pinch out growing tips when in full flower to deter blackfly. Requires support. Keep well watered, especially in dry spells and at the time of flower setting.

Advice
In cold areas, where the soil is poorly drained, or where there are mice, seeds can be sown 5 cm deep in compost, in pots or module trays. Water well, keep in a light position and plant out from March after acclimatising to outdoor conditions.

Harvest
Pick the beans as young as possible for the best flavour. When very young, they can be cooked and eaten in their pods. Broad beans are delicious cooked, cooled and used in salads too.
