Harvest: Jul to Sep
Sowing Indoors
Level-fill a module tray with seed compost, firming with the base of another tray. Water well with a fine rose. Sow seeds individually and lightly cover with vermiculite. Place in a propagator at 18-20 C or cover the tray with cling film and leave in a warm room. Keep moist.
Growing On
When shoots appear, remove cling film. Keep seedlings in a light position but shade from direct sunlight. When plants have 4 leaves, transplant into 8 cm pots of potting compost. Grow coolly and steadily at a minimum temperature of 15 C.
Planting Out
Gradually accustom plants to outdoor conditions for 2-3 weeks before planting out when temperatures exceed 10 C. Transfer to large pots (minimum 30 cm), grow bags, or into a border, spacing 45 cm apart, in a greenhouse or sunny, sheltered spot outside.
Support
If required, use stakes or supports to help young trees grow upright.
Advice
Keep well watered, especially during dry periods. Protect young plants from frost and pests. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and improve soil fertility.
