Summary
Beetroot Detroit
Traditional variety, introduced almost one hundred years ago and remains one of the favourites for main crop sowing.
Produces round, well coloured, tender roots up to 3-4 inches.
Despite the roots not always being uniform it still remains very popular.
Beetroot Detroit has smooth red skin, rich red flesh that stays tender and has an excellent sweet flavour.
Beetroot is ready to be picked when the roots are between the size of a golf ball and a tennis ball, this is usually 50-70 days after sowing.
Can be harvested young as baby beets or left to mature.
When harvesting, remove the tops by twisting them off with your hands to prevent the plants bleeding but don't throw these away, they have bags of taste and can be cooked and eaten like spinach.
Beetroot Detroit has good keeping qualities and can be stored over winter.
Ideal for successional sowing.
The roots of the young plants must be kept moist (but not overwatered) at all times and may need some protection from birds.
Over the years this old favourite has proven its worth.
