Onion AILSA CRAIG Now a heritage variety Ailsa Craig has been around since the 1880's. One of the most popular crops for the home gardener and an absolute must for the allotment holder. Popular and well-known Ailsa Craig produces large globe shaped bulbs with rich, golden straw-coloured skin. Very versatile, they can be used in a number of different ways, the large bulbs are a great choice for the show bench but it's in the kitchen where this onion really excels. Ailsa Craig has an excellent mild flavour and can be added to soups, stews and casseroles, used to add flavour to many meat dishes, can also be baked in pies and used in stuffing and sandwich fillings. Onions prefer a site with well-drained soil and grow best in full sun. Not good for long term storage, Ailsa Craig is best used in early winter. Mint is a great companion plant to grow with onions, it confuses and deters the onion fly. Detailed growing instructions are on the back of each packet Packet contains: 250 seeds approx.
