Savoy Cabbage. Vertus. Very hardy.

Savoy Cabbage. Vertus. Very hardy. Description

Savoy Cabbage. Vertus

Easily recognised by its crisp, puckered, dark green, ridged leaves savoy cabbage has a milder flavour and a softer texture than other cabbage types.

Vertus produces flat round heads of greyish-green leaves.

It has a pale tender heart and needs only brief cooking.

Late to mature and extremely hardy Vertus will withstand the harshest of our winters.

Savoy cabbage contains more vitamin C than oranges, as well as a large number of minerals, including iodine, calcium, magnesium, and potassium.

Both the Greeks and Romans wisely valued cabbage as a healthy food; however, they did go a little far in assuming it would cure drunkenness.

Vertus is suitable for immediate use or for storage.

As with all cabbage this variety needs well consolidated soil so leave several months between digging and planting.

Add farmyard manure to the soil when digging but never apply fresh manure before planting.

Birds can be a problem, young seedlings will need protection from sparrows.

Mature cabbage may also need some protection from pigeons.

Detailed growing instructions are on the back of each packet
